Neuron VS is shipping
The wait is over! - "and it was worth waiting for" - so says Hartmann managing director Stefan Rapp. "Many people may think, that the VS is nothing but a downgrade version of the Neuron hardware synthesizer. Let me tell you - this is simply not the truth!" The Neuron VS comes with the same soundengine like the Neuron keyboard. Together with <Nuke>, the hardware controller box, Hartmann puts a resynthesis system in the hands of the musician, that offers exactly the same sonic features as the Neuron keyboard synthesizer. Stefan Rapp: "The Neuron VS coupled with a powerfull computer is essentially comparable to the Neuron keyboard without the keyboard." (System Requirements)." A "volks-neuron" in the end?!?
The Neuron VS is available NOW! Order yours at your local dealer or in the hartmann online store (Shop). The next production run will not be shipping until next year!

Neuron at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Greece
Let us look back just a few weeks: The No.1 sports event of 2004, the olympic games, are starting up in their ancient homeland of Greece (official homepage of the olympic games / 2004). Athletes from all over the world come together to celebrate this peaceful test of strength between 202 nations.
Also on the tracks: Neuron. Adding to the experience of the spectacular opening ceremony. The typical sound of the neural sound engine is clearly audible throughout the whole event. Every time the camera turns through another spectacular sweep over the illuminated stadium, it is supported dramatically by Neuron's sonic clusters and atmospheres.
Months before the event, "Jack Morton / Public Events" (www.jackmorton.com) approached Hartmann with a request by Greece's top composer and producer Nikos Patrelakis, who was commissioned to write music for the opening and closing ceremonies of the olympic games. Nikos wanted a Neuron for his compositions. At Hartmann, we are happy and proud for having the chance to be part of the games by supplying Nikos with a Neuron synthesizer for his fantastic compositions.

A view into David's studio
When developing a musical instrument, there´s always a vision of certain sonic aesthetics that keep you moving on. David Sylvian is one artist, whose music Neuron seems to be made for.
David's compositions are characterised by his musical sensitivity and a very personal, "pictorial" feeling for sound. He is a true artist whose zenith never seems to be eclipsed.

Manfred Mann test-drives the Neuron
He is one of the most renowned keyboard players in the world. And the way he plays and performs was and still is exemplary for many keyboarders. During his European tour we had the honour of welcoming Manfred Mann to our premises in Ravensburg, Southern Germany. Manfred first got in touch with the instrument at a store in London, where he was fascinated by a particular sound on the Neuron.
"Neuron does have a really good sounding filter. Besides that, the instrument offers the opportunity to merge sound in a way that opens up a very usable sound spectrum. For my way of performing, realtime control over the sound is one very important feature. While soloing with my right hand, I use my left hand to change and control the sound of the machine. With Neuron I can drive up to four parameters simultaneously with each of the controllers to the left of the keyboard and this fits in perfectly with the way I play."
Manfred intensively tested the Neuron - and this side by side with a Moog VoyagerŽ* as sparring partner. "Analog filters - depending on the setting - do have the peculiarity to fade out thin within a certain keyboard range. This is exactly where Neuron opens up a new perspective by merging sound or parts of sounds through the Resynators and the Blender.
Manfred, many thanks for your visit! At Hartmann, in the upcoming weeks we will work intensively on a Solosynth Soundset that - inspired by Manfred's way of playing and performing - may open up a new side of neural network synthesis.

For the second time in a row Neuron receives the 2004 award for innovation from renowned German magazine "Keys"
"We would have expected to receive the value-for-money award", muses Hartmann's managing director Stefan Rapp, when accepting the award from German television star Cherno Jobatey. In fact, there aren't many companies left who serve the synthesizer market with innovative and uncompromising hardware instruments.
Even though only the combination of a unique sound engine and a specifically taylored, ergonomical user interface can open up truly creative potential for sound design and live performance, the trend towards pure software instruments seems to grow every tradeshow we attend. Keeping that in mind, the development of an instrument like the Neuron is a risky process for any manufacturer. But it's worth it as there are many artists out there who recognize the importance of having a dedicated user interface when creating individual, novel sounds.
Jean-Benoit Dunckel of the French cult band "Air" in German "Keys" magazine 05 | 2004:
Keys: "What fascinated you most when exploring the Neuron?"
Jean: "The whole concept and the handling. The Pad sounds are extremely complex and one can go on a fantastic journey through the frequency spectrum. Additionally, the six audio outputs allow everything to run in surround, which opens up really psychedelic sonic dimensions. A trippy keyboard with wonderful looks." ... "With a keyboard, we need the physical contact and we need to really feel it. To play a synthesizer should be like making love. You want to touch it with your fingertips and then experience it with your entire body."
We are happy and proud that soul legend Mr. Stevie Wonder - after having first contact at NAMM (see also news below) and a thorough test drive at his home studio - has decided to purchase a Neuron.

Neuron Operating System 1.5.0 now available!
With the new OS 1.5.0 it is now possible to use the high-end master effects in surround mode as well as stereo mode. New parameters are available to adjust Delay and Reverb amounts separately for Front and Rear.
Good news for all Neuron users who use the USB port to connect the instrument to a computer (e.g. to load user models): The login procedure is now much easier. With OS 1.5.0, it is possible to change the IP address on the Neuron rather than have to do this on your PC or Mac.
Besides those new features, the update again contains some system improvements. Please click on the graphic to the right and you will be transferred to the Neuron members' area (only for Neuron users who have login permission). There you can - free of cost - download OS 1.5.0. Have fun!

Neuron DVD available at Musikmesse Frankfurt (31 March - 03 April 2004)!
In time for the Musikmesse in Frankfurt, Hartmann will publish the DVD <Sound In Motion>. It contains in-depth information about neural synthesis and the Neuron as an instrument. All sound-generating components are explained in detail. Furthermore, the DVD contains interesting interviews with Hans Zimmer, Stephan Bernsee and Axel Hartmann (inventors of the Neuron) as well as Josef Pogadl (Software Engineer) and Stefan Rapp (Managing Director of Hartmann GmbH). Another highlight of the DVD is the integrated audio part, which contains compositions of prominent Neuron users in 5.1 surround format. By the way, <Sound in Motion> was produced by Christian Halten (Skylife Studios, Ludwigsburg, Germany),who lead the music DVD charts for several weeks with "Off Space".
NAMM 2004 / Anaheim
Mr. Stevie Wonder tries out the new Model and Sound set. Josef Pogadl, Software Engineer at Hartmann, provides him with background information. Stevie is particularly impressed by Sound 014 "Didgeridoo", which shows off very drastically the sound shaping power of neural synthesis.
Santa Monica / after NAMM: By now almost obligatory, a visit to Hans Zimmer's Media Ventures Studios allows insights into perhaps the most impressive studio environment in Hollywood. In an extensive meeting, Hartmann's development team discussed new ideas and obtained reports on the day-to-day production with Neuron.
Hans uses two Neuron Synthesizers; Mel Wesson has a third and provides Hans with sounds for his lavish movie projects. Mel, who used to spend ages combining many sound generators to construct the audio effects for tense scenes, is an enthusiastic Neuron user.
Neuron wins Electronic Musician | Editors' Choice
As part of its annual award for the most interesting products, Electronic Musician magazine chooses Neuron as the best Digital Synthesizer of the year 2003. We are delighted to receive this coveted award and wish to thank Electronic Musician and its editors for this honour!
